Supporting Youth Athletics
Each year the
Dover Police Charities spends approximately $5,000 to assist youth sports
leagues and initiatives. It is not uncommon for a police employee to coach the
team that the Charities is sponsoring in the name of the Police Department.
This provides an even greater connection between the police department and the
youth or families involved.
We also work
with sports programs to help them bring a message to the players about how
important it is to be the best athlete you possibly can and to not let tobacco,
alcohol or other drugs interfere with that. For example the Coalition assists
the Recreation Department with Coach's training to help teach communications
techniques for coaches speaking to their players about drug use and their
athletic ability. At youth sports sign up nights we also have a table of
information about the importance of being smoke free and avoid second hand smoke
(see:
Smoke Free
Athletes page of the Coalition section of this web site).
The Police
Charities assists or promotes youth sports in a variety of ways.
