Taking a Stand: The DARE
situation: This is
the time to think about all the things you learned in DARE. You will be taking
a few moments to look through your workbook and apply what you learned to a
"real life situation" in the form of a letter to a friend. Here is the
best friend growing up has moved to another town. After a while he or she
begins writing to you. In the letters the friend tells you that he or she has
been using either MARIJUANA or ALCOHOL or CIGARETTES with some new "cool"
friends that have let him hang around with them. Your friend says it is "cool"
and "there's nothing wrong with using it". The friend also says that when he
or she comes out to visit this summer: "we will try it together"!
Your assignment >
Your friend is using one of those 3 drugs (your DARE Officer will tell you which
one) and asking you to use it also. Write a letter to your friend telling him
(or her) what your decision is and also give the friend information and advice
that will help him or her make a good decision as well. Reminder: You
should use your knowledge in the following areas in your letter:
- CONSEQUENCES: consider what
you know about the risks and consequences of using it and how it can affect
your life and your family (remember your DARE Workbook has this kind of
- REASONS PEOPLE USE THE DRUG:
consider what might be causing this person to use it. Perhaps you can help
him (or her) understand more about that. Tell your friend who else he or she
could go to get help.
- POSITIVE ALTERNATIVES: How
could being involved with more positive activities help the friend deal with
some of the things that cause people to want to use this drug.
- EXPLAIN WHY to your friend
what your decision is and why being drug free is important to you.
I strongly prefer it to be on word
processing. If you don't have access to a computer, then see me or your
teacher and we'll see if we can help.
Also, get right to the point.
Some students in the past have written several sentences about what they have
been doing for fun or general information that you would write in a normal
letter to a friend. Please don't do this - talk about the drug offer right
